Tips for Creating Hot Prom Hairstyles

Prom hairstyle trends may change from year to year, but the basic rule for looking great remains the same. Choose a hairstyle that suits your hair type, flatters your face and compliments your prom dress or gown. Be sure to choose a style that you will be comfortable with for the whole night. Nothing will spoil your prom fun faster than finicky hair that falls apart halfway through your prom or a fancy updo that won't let you move comfortably. Don't let your hairstyle hijack your prom look!

The best approach is to look at lots of magazines, find styles you like and take them to your stylist at your test appointment. This is an appointment a couple of weeks before prom, where you will try out ideas, learn what will work best with your to create the style you want and gives you a chance to wear to see how it feels and how it stands up. When you go for your prom day appointment, you'll be perfectly prepared with information to create the best prom hairstyle possble!

Here's a few prom hairstyles tips ~

Loose, smooth curls are still a hot look this year. Stay away from tight, curly looks and be sure to experiment with products designed to define and hold the curls. Loose curls work great for smooth, flowing medium to long hair and also look great in an updo with curls left loose to soften the look.

Create smooth hair by blow drying with a texturizing product. Blow dry your hair in sections with a round brush pulling it straight by creating tension on the hair with the brush. As each section becomes dry, roll with a 1 1/2" velcro roller (the smaller the section, the curlier the hair) while hair is still hot from the hairdryer. Repeat with each section until all hair is rolled. This creates very loose curls. For tighter curls, use smaller rollers or hot rollers.

Curling irons are okay too, but the curls don't always last. Add some hair jewelry such as a sparkly band, clip or barette to hold curls off face or to create a 'peicey' look.

Spiky styles are a fun way to express yourself. To achieve a real spiky look you must have a layered cut. Begin by blow drying the back of your hair in an upward motion from the nape of the neck to the crown. Pull out small sections of hair to create the spikes using a piecing paste or molding or sculpting gel. This type of product allows you to mold and sculpt the hair into the shape you want.

Top off this look with some jeweled hair spirals. Twist sections of the hair and secure all but the ends on the head with bobby pins or your choice of hair jewelry. The ends can be done in several different ways. Random pieces can be crimped with a crimping iron, the pieces can be shaped and molded, or the pieces can be left to flow free.

Sleek updos are always in style. If you are wearing a strapless gown or going for a 'Hollywood' glamor look, consider a tight, neat French roll or knot adorned with a bejewlled pin or clip for fabulous elegance and glamor. Blow dry your hair with a large brush and use a smoothing gel to get your hair as straight as possible. Experiment with the position of the knot or roll to see which is most flattering for both your face shape and dress style. Generally the most flattering position, which will add height and lift the face is above the halfway point of your head. This is only a general rule, be sure to play with this in the mirror.

To look your best you must have great hair. A great haircut makes a great look. Certain shaped faces look better with certain cuts. Most cuts have an accent line, for example, where long bangs would blend in with the rest of the hair. Make sure that accent line is pointing at your best feature.

Your hair needs to be healthy! Healthy hair shines, bounces and behaves. Months before your prom make sure you eat right......(that's right, no McDonalds), drink at least 8 glasses of water daily, and sleep at least 7 hours nightly. If you're in a pinch for magically healthy hair and your hair is dry, get a deep moisturizing treatment. Most salons offer moisturizing treatments, or if you do not want to spend the money, try one at home.

Great prom hairstyles result from starting early. Don't wait until the last minute!
